Play Doh Dia De Los Muertos Sugar Skull Kids Craft

I love this time of year because we celebrate Hallowen and Dia De Los Muertos at the same time.  While I'm not Mexican, I do appreciate Dia De Los Muertos.  It's a good reminder to celebrate and remember those that are no longer with us.

Every year my son and I have done an easy craft to celebrate the holiday.  (You can find the whole list below.)  This year we tried an easy open-ended play doh sugar skull activity.  Gotta say, the results were pretty fabulous!

Before we start, I gotta give a big shot out to Amber from Wee Warhols.  Definitely check out her IG feed and blog.  She is one fabulously creative mama, artist, and teacher.  I saw her transform plastic skulls with Model Magic and felt inspired to try out this activity!

Let's learn more about Dia De Los Muertos

In case you want to learn more about this holiday, you could watch the Book of Life movie (which has amazing animation!)  Or you could read these two picture books with the kiddos:

And if you're looking for more craft ideas, here are a list of our previous Day of the Dead Crafts!

Ok... Let's Make some Sugar Skull Play Doh Skulls!

Grab a plastic skull.  Cover it with play doh!  (We snagged ours at an awesome sale at Michaels last week.)   Or, to make these skulls more permanent, you could use air dry clay like  Model Magic.

Use other color play doh to add more colorful details.

Then, add googly eyes, sparkles, and beads!

(My son really liked seeing our skull with eyes.)

And that's all!  Simply peel off the play doh once you're done.

Happy making, friends!  I really hope you have a fun time trying out this activity and learning about another culture with the kiddos!
