DIY Magazine Strip Silhouette Heart Art

Hrmm.. magazine strip silhouette art?  Sounds kind of naughty, but I promise you this recycled craft is anything but that.  Take a look!

DIY Magazine Strip Silhouette Heart Art
See?  Totally PG and totally cute.  I'm always on the lookout for easy and affordable DIY artwork.  This silhouette heart looks great and BONUS uses recycled materials. Keep reading to see how I made it!

Materials:
  • Brown paper bag
  • Scissors
  • Paper Cutter
  • White glue
  • Canvas
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Hot glue gun

Directions:
(This tutorial is a simplified version of the one found on Brit + Co.   They roll their magazine strips, giving their art a really cool 3D look.   I'm much too lazy to do that, so I just glued on strips.)

Steps to make magazine strip silhouette art
 1.  Cut out your heart shape.  (Or really, you could cut out any shape you want- your kids' silhouettes, your state, an inspiring word, etc...)  Make sure your shape is small enough to fit on your canvas!

2.  Cut your paper strips!  (I made mine about 1/4" wide.  I tried 1/2" at first, but I didn't like how it looked.)

3.  Glue your strips onto your shape one at a time.  Don't worry if the strips extend off the image.

4.  Once your glue dries, flip your heart over and trim all the bits that hang over the edge.

5. Paint your canvas.  (I had a REALLY hard time choosing a color that went with all my strips.  I tried out 3 colors before choosing this brown "almost paper bag" color.  It seemed to work the best.)

6.  Once your canvas paint dries, hot glue your heart on!
