Giant Chinese New Year Dragon Collaborative Art

This past weekend we celebrated Lunar New Year with several friends.  There were tons of yummy snacks and (of course) several Chinese New Year crafts and activities!   One of my favorites was this giant, collaborative Dragon painting, so I thought I'd share it here today.

To prepare this activity, I drew a giant dragon using black acrylic paint on a roll of drawing paper the night before.

Then, we taped it to a picnic table and provided the kids with tempera paint.

Here's the result of their joint efforts. (Children as young as 2 and as old as 10 painted.)

And that's it!  If you're interested in the other activities we had at the playdate, we also....
  • Used origami paper to fold origami dogs
  • Practiced writing Chinese characters (like "fu")  on red construction paper using washable tempera paint
  • Held a mini-dragon parade (One of the super talented mothers made a cardboard dragon for us to use!)
  • Threw snap poppers on the ground to imitate "fireworks"
  • Handed out red envelopes to kids
  • Did a toy swap (every child brought an old toy and exchanged it with another child's old toy)

And as always, if you're interested in more craft ideas, check out the links below:
