Make Beautiful Leaf Sewing Art with Kids

Are you looking for an easy fall craft that doesn't require colorful leaves?  I know this may seem like a strange question to you.  But we just don't get those beautiful red, yellow, and orange leaves over here in California!  And I miss them so much.

So for those of you who'd like to do a leaf project with the kids... today's leaf sewing art is for you!

I made these with my preschooler the other day and we both had a blast.  It felt really nice working side-by-side with him on our different art projects.

Here are the materials that we used:

  • Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Leaves (Make sure you get waxy, thick ones.  I think ours came from a magnolia tree? They hold up much better when hole punched!)
  • Masking Tape
  • Hole Puncher (I LOVE this one.  We got it awhile back at Target and it's so easy to use.)
  • Stapler

Materials Needed to Make Leaf Sewing Yarn Art With Kids

This leaf sewing project is so easy to do.  Just hole punch a bunch of holes.   Then, cut out a long strand of yarn.  Tape one end of the yarn to the back of the leaf.  Then, wrap the other end with a bit of masking tape (to help with the stringing.)  Then, just sew away!

Here's one that my son did (and then I added the staples):

And here's one that I did:

Here's what the leaves look like on the back.

(I simply taped down yarn strands once we were finished using them.)
