Fairy Tale Mad Libs

As a child I loved reading books.  Now that we have Chuck, I'm so glad that he enjoys listening to stories too!  This week's Creative Preschool Collaborator's theme is fairy tales.  So be sure to scroll down to the bottom of the page to see four other fun fairy tale related crafts and activities!

Now you know that I LOOOOVE me some crafts.  But, this time I wanted to switch it up.  Instead of doing a fairy tale related craft with Chuck, I thought it would be fun to do a joint-storytelling activity with him.

Did you ever fill out Mad Libs as a kid?  In case you haven't, Mad Libs are short stories with key components missing.  The child takes part in the storytelling fun by filling in missing nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc.  The only catch with Mad Libs is that the child has to first come up with the words before even reading the story.  Then, once the words are filled in, a hilarious story results!

Since Chuck's 3, so he's too young to know what nouns, verbs, or adjectives are, but he's still able to think up different words on the spot. So this Mad Lib story was written with that in mind.(Click here to download a fun Preschool Fairy Tale Mad Lib Story!)

Here are two ways you can do this mad lib activity with your children:

1.  Read the story to your children and point to them whenever they should fill in a blank.

This is how I played with Chuck.  I read the story and whenever I saw a blank, I would point to him to come up with the missing bits.  He really got into the story this way!

2.  Ask your children to come up with the words first (page 3), then use their responses to fill in the blanks.  Read their story aloud.

This is more similar to the traditional Mad Lib activity.  We didn't try it this way, but I imagine that if your child was patient and a bit older, it could be fun too!

I hope you share lots of giggles with this storytelling activity.  And as promised, here are
