Before we start:

Full disclosure, I didn't come up with this craft on my own! I found it in this awesome craft in the book:  The Boy's Book of Adventure My eldest loves this book, so we highly recommend it!

Looking for a video of this craft?  Well, my friend Maggy over at Red Ted Art made a very similar craft and she included a video making a drawstring bag.  So if you learn better with videos, check hers out!  She also has a ton of fun crafts on her site, so check those out too!

Materials Needed to Make Pouches:

  • Felt
  • Yarn
  • Beads
  • Scissors (We always use fabric scissors to make super clean cuts)
  • Sharpie Markers
  • Ruler
  • Masking Tape

How to Make a No-Sew Felt Drawstring Bag with Kids

1.  Fold your felt sheet in half and then in half again.

2.  Grab your ruler because we're doing some math!

Math Time:  Remember circles and how their radiuses (distance from the circle's center to the edge of the circle) are the same all throughout the circle?  We're going to use that math knowledge to cut out a circular shape from our rectangular piece of felt!

My folded rectangle's shortest side was 4 1/2", so I took a ruler and measured 4 1/2" from the center of my larger piece of felt (which is the lower left corner of my folded felt rectangle) outwards.  (Basically, I'm going to cut out a circle with a radius of 4 1/2.")

3.  Then, I connected those markings....

4.  And cut the felt around the curve...

5.  And opened it up to reveal a circle!

Ooh la la! Math magic!

(Note:  You could also just trace a circular object like a plate onto your piece of felt.  But I found this way to be a great way to teach math AND use the greatest amount of felt to create the largest bag.)

6.  Now we're going to make 16 approximately equal cuts around our circle, about 1" from the edge.
This is where we will weave our string through the felt.

Time for some more.... math magic!

Let's do this by eye!

Imagine the circle like a clock face.  Made marks at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 positions.  (These 4 marks are noted by the 1s  in the picture.)

Then, make 4 marks halfway between each of the 1s.  (Noted by the 2s in the picture below.)

Then, make 8 marks halfway between each of the 1s and 2s. (Noted as the 3s in the picture below.)

Now you should have a total of 16 marks!

Cut small slits at each of those marks.

7.  Now cut out about 40" of yarn.

8.  Wrap your masking tape around one end so you can "sew" through your cuts.  Stick a piece of masking tape to the other side so that you won't accidentally pull your yarn all the way through.

9.  Then, sew up and down through all your slits.

10.  Pull both strings to reveal your pouch!  (This is the magical part!)

11.  Remove your masking tape and tie on beads to the ends of the string so that the yarn won't pull through your slits.

Now you have a super sweet pouch that can store all sorts of lovely treasures.
