Grow Crystal Geode Eggs with Kids

Do you love geodes? My kids adore sparkly rocks and for this Easter craft, we tried our hand and made sparkly geode Easter eggs.  (Or maybe you could call them dragon eggs? Oooh, I love the sound of that.) Aren't they beautiful? Directions for making them are below!

Materials Needed:

  • A bowl
  • Something to stir with (we used disposable chopsticks)
  • Hot water (doesn't have to be boiling, think something as hot as tea)
  • Food coloring (or liquid watercolors would work great too!)
  • Borax (You can usually find it in the laundry section of your store)
  • Egg shells (cleaned and washed)

Directions:

1. Pour hot water into a bowl.
2. Add borax powder + stir. Keep adding more powder until the borax no longer dissolves. (You'll see powder on the bottom of your container that won't go away. That's ok! It means you made a supersaturated solution.)
3. Add food coloring. (As much as you want!)
4. Submerge your eggshells.
5. Wait 2 hours until the water cools.
6. Dislodge your beautiful sparkly eggs from the bottom of your container and enjoy.

And that's it! The crystals will remain on the egg even after the egg shells dry. But this isn't a forever craft. The crystals are pretty fragile and will flake off. But they should last for a while if you don't touch them.
