This year Halloween kinda snuck up on me and I wanted to make easy costumes that wouldn't cost very much or be very difficult to make.  So my husband and I decided to be Elephant and Piggie.  (If you haven't heard of them, they're the main 2 characters in Mo Willems' Elephant and Piggie Books.  Both of my sons LOVE the series.  They're sweet, easy-to-read, and hilarious.)

If you love these books too, I highly recommend these costumes.

Materials Needed:

To make elephant and piggie costumes, you'll need

  • Grey and pink shirts
  • Cereal boxes
  • Pink, black, and grey craft paint
  • Sharpie markers
  • Paint Brushes
  • Stapler
  • Duct Tape
  • Scissors
  • Coffee stirrer/popsicle stick

Let's Make Elephant and Piggie Costumes!

1.  First, sketch out your faces and word bubbles onto a sheet of paper.  Cut those out and make sure they look big enough on your head.  (I have a pretty big head, so I had to make my piggie face particularly large.)

2.  Trace your designs onto cereal boxes.  Also, cut out two long strips of cereal box cardboard to be your headband.  (Staple the strips together to make headbands that wrap around your head.)

3.  Paint your cardboard!  (Use Sharpies to add details once your paint is dry.)

4.  Staple your headband.

5. Attach your word bubble to your face.  Use a stirrer to help make sure the word bubble doesn't topple over.

6.  Staple your elephant and pigge faces onto your headbands.  Then, use duct tape to further secure them in place.

And that's it!   Wear your headpieces with pride and a pink or grey shirt!
