Vibrant Chalk and Crayon Splash Art

I'm always on the hunt for easy and unique art projects to try out with kids.  And today's project pretty much fits the bill!  Children usesidewalk chalk, crayons, and a splash of ink to create vibrantly colored, glowing artwork!

I originally spotted this idea from book called "Crayons" by Henry Pluckrose.  (I tried to find a copy on Amazon... and found this one that had a similar title, but different cover.  I'm not sure if it's the same one... but it's a good place to start if you want to find the book yourself.)

Because we were going to do an ink wash, we used drawing paper that was thicker than plain old computer paper and thinner (and cheaper) than watercolor paper.

First, I sketched out designs with plain old sidewalk chalk.  Then, we colored around the chalk lines with crayon.  We made sure to press down really hard with our crayon.

(My preschooler helped color in the fish.  As you can see, he left lots of white spaces... which turned out to give quite beautiful results.)

Then, we took out a bottle of fountain pen ink and painted it over our artwork.  Then, I took a piece of paper towel and quickly wiped excess ink off.

It was pretty neat to watch the chalk absorb the ink and the crayon resist the ink.

We tried both blue and black ink.  My favorite was the blue.  The blank ink gave much darker results.

Here's what the resulting artwork looked like after everything dried overnight:

So, so, pretty.

I definitely recommend trying this project out with your kiddos!  (My preschooler helped out with the coloring, but I think older children could definitely draw, color, and paint their own artwork.)
