Glow in the dark Kids Jellyfish Costume

Recently I received several containers of Tulip Glow Paint to try out.  As you know, I LOVE making costumes for Chuck. (Remember the spider costumeLightening McQueen Costume, and Mr. Potato head costume?  Yup.  Good times.)  So I was excited to somehow incorporate the glow in the dark paint into a costume idea.  Chuck really loves sea creatures right now, so I made him this easy, NO SEW jellyfish costume.

Oh yeah.  And it glows!

DIY Kids Jellyfish Costume (that glows!)

make a DIY glow in the dark jellyfish costume! Super easy and unique!

Adorable right? Just wait till you see it glowing.  It really looks like a jellyfish is sitting on top of his head!

Here's how I made it!

Materials

  • Tulip Glow in the Dark Paint
  • Sponge Brush
  • Hat
  • Silver Ribbons (Thick and Thin)
  • Old shiny shirt
  • Fabric scissors
  • Hot Glue gun
  • Bubble Wrap
  • Packing Tape
  • Masking Tape
  • Cardboard
  • Loofa
  • Cling wrap

Let's Make a Glow in the dark Jellyfish costume!

how to make a glow in the dark jellyfish costume!

1.  Remove any ribbon from your hat and exchange it for a silver ribbon.  (We used an old cowboy hat, so I took out the red and white rope and swapped it out with a new ribbon.)

2.  Wrap your bubble wrap around the top of the hat.  Use packing tape to keep it in place.  Make a jellyfish-shape dome.

3.  Test out your glow in the dark paints to see which colors and thicknesses you like the best.  (I shone a black light on the paint to make sure that the colors really popped!)

4.  Cut your thin ribbons out to create the jellyfish's tentacles.  Tape the ribbons onto a piece of cardboard.  Then, trace them with glow in the dark paint.

5.  Cut up your loofa!  Now you've got some curly tube bits for the jellyfish's middle.  Wrap some cling wrap around cardboard.  Then, slide your loofa over it.  Now you can use a sponge brush to dab on glow in the dark paint onto the mesh!  The cling wrap will prevent the loofa from sticking to itself and to the cardboard.

6.  Cut up an old shiny shirt.

7.  Use hot glue and glue the shiny shirt over the top of your jellyfish head.  Then, glue on your thin ribbon tentacles.  Then, tie a knot in the middle of your loofa bits.  Use packing tape to attach your loofa bit (by the knot) into the middle of the hat.

8.  Use a sponge brush to cover the jellyfish head with paint.  (I used 2 layers of paint to really make it pop.)  Then, add extra details by squeezing the paint straight onto the head.

Wait for it to dry and voila!  A unique DIY jellyfish costume!

And then turn off the light, shine a black light onto your paint, and watch it really glow!
(The paint glows without the black light.  But I used it for my photography to make everything really pop.)

Isn't it amazing?  The glow in the dark paint really brings the costume to life.  Doesn't it look like a real sea creature?

Here's a side-by-side comparison so you can see the costume in the daytime and at night.

Oh yeah.  And since we had a ton of paint leftover, we used them to make some salad spinner spin art.  (Image from my Instagram feed.)

The paint is non-toxic and works on a variety of materials.  So far we've used it on fabric and paper and had great results.  Neat, right?  If you'd like to learn about more ILoveToCreate products and projects, you can follow them on FacebookTwitter, or Pinterest!
