Colorful, Rainbow Train Tracks (inspired by Old Tracks, New Tricks)

Today we're sharing another super easy rainbow craft.  Why?  Because I love rainbows.  And, because I love breathing new life into our old toys.

Old Tracks, New Tricks

Before we begin, I have to share the inspiration behind this rainbow, transportation themed craft.  We recently received a lovely book called Old Tracks, New Tricks to review.

I was worried my eldest wouldn't like it since he's kinda outgrown his train set.  So I was super surprised when he LOVED the story.  It's such fun tale about 3 little tracks who help to change the minds of 3 grumpy trains.

Lovely photographed pictures are accompanied by some fun rhyming verses.  My favorite part about the book was that it shared a TON of fun ways to breathe new life into your train set.  For example, check this awesome idea out-

(Building raised tracks was one of the first things my son wanted to try after reading this book.)

Raised tracks are definitely cool.  But being the color-lover that I am, we had to try painting some train tracks.

Let's Paint our Train Tracks!

We used acrylic paint to paint the tracks.  My son wanted to paint his several different colors.  I was inspired by the arches and saw rainbow!

In the past, we've used watercolors to paint wooden things.  (Like this Wooden Peg Doll Necklace and these Crayon and Watercolor Resist Frames)   But this time I pulled out the acrylic paints because I wanted longer lasting colors that wouldn't smear if the tracks got wet.  (My youngest son is a big drooler.)

Once the paint dried, we pulled out our Sharpies and added extra details.

Neat, right?  The colors totally added more fun and pop into our train play!  (And let's be real.  Who wouldn't want to drive on a rainbow?  Wheeee!)

My son had such fun painting the track, that he also wanted to try out another idea from the book- foil covered tracks. So we did that too!

I hope you have fun trying out this activity and reading the book with your kiddos too!
