Handprint Christmas Peace Dove Art

It's time to start making Christmas crafts! Yesterday we put up the tree and it was so, so sweet to see my preschooler oohing and ahhing over the lights.  Today I tried to keep the Christmas-y momentum going with this super easy paper plate dove craft.  Inspired by Imagination Tree's sweet dove handprint keepsake, we made our own version using paper plates instead of salt dough.  (Anna's craft is really, really lovely, so definitely check out the post for another fun idea.)

This craft is perfect for kids who love having their hands and feet traced. Personally, I find handprint crafts really cute.  It's always special to go back and see reminders of just how tiny the kids once were...

Materials Needed:

  • Paper Plates
  • Hole Puncher (We used a star puncher)
  • Markers
  • Scissors
  • White Paper
  • Stickers (We used dot stickers.)
  • Paint (We used our Kwik Stix Paints.)
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Glue Sticks
  • Construction Paper

(Many apologies for not having step-by-step shots.  I was in the middle of making the craft with my boys, so I never got the camera out.)

1.  Paint your paper plates.  (Our Kwik Stix Paints dried quickly so they were great to use!)
2.  Trace your child's hand onto a sheet of white paper.  Cut it out.
3. Use a glue stick to glue the handprint onto the plate.
4.  Use a marker and add details.  Cut out a small beak from orange construction paper and then glue it on.
5. Use stickers or construction paper to add in extra details.
6.  Punch your paper plate twice.
7.  Use a pipe cleaner to create a small hanger for your paper plate dove art!

Here's one that my preschooler made with my help:
(We colored the plate together.  Then, I traced his hand and cut it out.  And then he got distracted by something else, so I ended up going bonkers with the decorations while my older son crafted.)

Here's one that my eldest made.  At first he wasn't into the craft at all, but once he glued his bird on, he enjoyed adding all the little details...
