Yarn Pinecone Owl Craft (And 8 Awesome Owl Books!)

Are you fully embracing fall and all types of Fall Crafts? It doesn't get very cold over here in California, but chilly mornings and nights do make it feel more fall-ish. A couple of weeks ago I saw these super cute yarn pinecone owls over on  Squiggle Dot and Squeeze's IG feed and was inspired.

So today I'm sharing our adorable pinecone owls. They're sweet and wooly and the perfect cozy craft for fall!  You also probably have all the materials needed right at home. (And in case you're looking for some fun owl books, I've also included a list of our favorite owl books down below too!)

Owl Craft Materials Needed:

  • Pinecones (We found that larger ones worked better because the thicker yarn fit better between the scales.)
  • Felt
  • Hot Glue Gun + Sticks
  • Scissors (We use fabric scissors)
  • Pom Poms
  • Googly Eyes
  • Thick Yarn  (Don't have thick yarn? Then just glue felt directly onto the pinecones. If you're looking for some exquisite inspiration, check out these felt owls from Lia Griffith. They're gorgeous.)

How to Make Wooly Pinecone Owls with Kids

Step 1

Starting from the bottom of your pinecone, hot glue thick yarn between the scales.

(Note: As you can see, it was harder to fit the thick yarn between the smaller pinecone scales. I definitely recommend larger ones for this project.)

Step 2

Cut out wings, beak, and eyes from felt. Glue on googly eyes to the felt.

Step 3

Hot glue on felt pieces. Add on pom poms as you see fit!

(My youngest thought it was a "hoot" gluing pom-pom ears onto his owl. )
