"Dreaming of you" 3D Heart Art Project for Valentine's Day

It's January... which means it's time to start sharing Valentine's Day Craft Ideas! Last year I posted an easy way to draw 3D optical illusion hearts.  They were such a hit.  So this year I'm sharing this cute "Dreaming of You" 3D heart drawing.  Like the previous art project, it uses curved and straight lines to create the illusion of a three-dimensional drawing.  But this time I added some fun Sharpie details and a sweet sleepy heart face (because let's be real- who doesn't love a kawaii face?)

Here's how to draw these sleepy three-dimensional heart drawings with your kids.

Step-by-Step instructions for drawing adorable 3D optical illusion hearts

A great Sharpie and Colored Pencil art project for kids!

How to Make this Heart Art Project

1.  First, cut out a heart shape from red construction paper.

2. Cut across the heart.  Use a glue stick to glue the paper heart onto the page.  Then, use a pencil to trace the bottom of the heart and draw lines marking the edge of the blanket.

3. Use Sharpie markers to draw the 3D lines. The lines should be straight in the blanket portion and curved in the heart portion.  Erase your pencil marks.

4.  Color between the lines.  (Instead of traditional color pencils, we've been using twistable color pencils and love them. They're always "sharpened" and super easy to twist.  Plus, the colors seem creamier than normal pencils so it's easier to get more saturated results.)

5.  Go bonkers and add extra details and doodles to create a pillow, bed, and bedframe for your sleepy heart to rest in.

Take a risk (and fail?)

Ok, and here's my full disclosure- I tried to push this art project even further and drew vertical lines to see if that would improve the drawing's optical illusion.

It was a fail.  Here's my result in case you were curious.  I wouldn't suggest this step at all, but making art requires bravery, right?

That's it!  Hope you enjoy drawing this art project with your family or class!
