Let's Make Easy and Colorful Magnetic Sculptures!

Magnets are such fun things to explore!  For me, there's nothing cooler than feeling that invisible magnetic force pull or push two items together.  Today we're exploring magnetism and the connection between art and science with this really easy Magnetic Sculpture Activity!

Kids STEAM Activity:   Making Magnetic Sculptures!

Kids STEAM activity- make magnetic sculptures from everyday items and toys!

Here are the items that we used to do this activity:

  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Washers
  • Screws
  • Anything else that's magnetic (We tried using toy cars... but realized that they were plastic! Oof!)
  • Magnetic toys (We used the cheaper versions of  these Magna-Tiles)

Notes:

  • I have a preschooler, but I still made sure to watch him and remind him to not eat the screws and washers!
  • This activity was super easy because I used items we already had at home.  My friend Ana from Babble Dabble Do did a similar activity last year... but she made her own materials!  So if you like magnetic sculptures, go check out her magnetic sculpture activity!  (She's also got a ton of other great STEAM activities on her site too!)

I just handed the materials to my son and then we got to work!  Because we used these magnetic toys,  we had the option of easily making flat designs and 3 dimensional ones too!

The magnets are pretty strong, but we still cut our pipe cleaners to really make sure they stuck on!

My favorite sculpture so far- doesn't it look like a weird bird's nest?

Today's post is part 2 of a 5 week STEAM Summer Camp Series.  I love doing art and crafts, but I also love exploring science, technology, engineering, and mathematics too!  Each Friday for the next 3 weeks, several STEAM-loving kid bloggers and I will share easy and fun ways to explore your 5 senses with kids!  Last week we explored sight. This week we're all exploring touch.  (See why I chose magnets?)  Here are some other fabulous ideas for exploring our sense of touch!
