Colorful and Glittery Skull Craft
In the midst of what is going on in our country, I almost feel hesitant to keep posting this week. How can I write posts about crafts, Sharpie markers, and glitter when there is so much misunderstanding, hurt, and turmoil going on?
But you know what? This blog is my happy place. And being creative and making things with my son makes me happy. So I'm going to keep making and posting... even while we try to wrap my mind around everything that's going on.
That being said- this Halloween/ Dia De Los Muertos Craft is from awhile back. We're keeping the skulls up until Thanksgiving... so I figure I could still post about them here too.

Clay Portrait Pendant Necklaces
My son started elementary school this week. *Sob* It's been such a happy, bittersweet couple of days. Recently we've been creating a lot of little trinkets with clay. (Have you seen our clay outer space necklace and clay dream catcher?) So I asked him to make some clay portrait pendant necklaces with me before school started. This way I can wear them and remember him while he's away.

Easy Origami Pikachu Tutorial
We've gotten hooked onto Pokemon Go. I kept holding off on the app, but once my husband showed my son.... he fell in love with the little critters, especially Pikachu. Pikachu was always my favorite too, so it was neat to share that with him. We recently made this super easy origami pikachu together. (Oh yes! Another paper folding craft!) It was such a fun kids craft that I'm sharing the step-by-step folding directions over here!

Family Watercolor Hand print Art
I'm always a bit nervous about transitions in life. And having a new baby has certainly been a humongous transition for our whole family. Diapers, giggles, crying, baby snuggles... we're still trying to find our new groove as a family of four. So I came up with this hand print art project to do with my eldest son. Despite all the crazy chaos that this stage of life brings, I still wanted to celebrate our family.

Cheap, Easy, and Creative Super Hero Party Ideas
A couple of weeks ago my son graduated from preschool. I didn't think I would get emotional... but I did. I felt kinda sad-happy realizing that he wasn't a baby anymore. Oh boy, I'm starting to feel a bit emotional right now. Yeesh... must.. toughen.. up.... Ahem. Anyway, back to introducing today's post...
Our preschool celebrated with a super hero themed graduation party. All the moms and dads came together to plan a really fun day for the kids. I was so impressed by everyone's creativity. I just had to share the super hero-themed activities and crafts here because I know a ton of you probably have super hero loving kids at home too.
So put on your super hero capes and get ready for some...

Modern Art with Kids- Lichtenstein Dot Art
Lately I've wanted to expose my preschooler to different types of art. But with a new baby at home, our creative and crafty times have been hard to come by. So I was really excited when my older son and I had the chance to make some art the other morning. We looked at Lichtenstein's Stepping Out, talked about what we saw in the artwork, and then made some of our own inspired modern pop art!

Tissue Paper Luminary Drawings (and book list!)
How did you celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day? This is the first year that I’ve talked to my preschooler about this holiday. We read a bunch of picture books celebrating diversity and service (links
below) and talked about what it means to dream and treat all people kindly, no matter what they look like. Being a craft lover, we also sat down and made these Tissue Paper Luuminary Drawings. I love
the discussion that we had while making them and I love how they beautiful they turned out
too!

The Artful Year and Melted Crayon Friendship Rocks
Chuck doesn't always enjoy making things with me. (What? Yup.) A lot of days he would just rather that we read books or race airplanes together. And I'm really trying harder to let go and follow his lead. But I love crafting. So I keep putting out those invitations in hopes that he'll join me. And on those special occasions when he's interested and involved in a craft... boy oh boy... those days are really magic.
We recently received a copy of Jean Van't Hul's The Artful Year to review. Jean is an artist, mom of 2, and author of the amazing kids' art blog Artful Parent. (She's also the author of another great kids' art book The Artful Parent. )
In her newest book, Jean shares a whopping 175 family-friendly crafts, and recipes! The photos are dreamy and beautiful; the crafts span through all the seasons and holidays of the year; and the recipes look really, really yummy. I love this book. But those things aren't what I love the most about her book.
What I love the most about the book is her voice. In the beginning she shares this beautiful quote-
Wow. That just hit so close to home. I don't want to just make things with Chuck. Things eventually break down, get lost, or tossed away. I want to foster creativity. I want to build our relationship. I want to make lasting memories.
Ok. This was a super long intro, I know. But I just had to get that all out there. Because it really is a beautiful, beautiful book.
Here's the craft that we chose to try out first from the book:
