Easy DIY Bubble Ring Favors

I LOVE snow globes.  Last Christmas Chuck and I walked through store aisles shaking a ton up and then watching, mesmerized, as the snow gently drifted down.  It was hypnotizing and strangely therapeutic.

My love for snow globes was the initial inspiration behind these DIY bubble rings.  I thought it would be so fun to wear tiny snow globes on your fingers.  Then you could shake them and see lovely swirling designs any time you wanted!

Twirly Whirly Paper Snowflake Mobile (And our favorite snow books)

Is it a good time to make snowflake crafts with the kids?  The answer to that question is always, "YES!"  Snowflake crafts in summer, snowflake crafts in spring, snowflake crafts all time of the year is my personal crafting mantra.

Well, now that we've removed all the Halloween decorations (sob, sob) my son and I are starting to decorate our home for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  While I've yet to find a good kids' Turkey craft that I like, I can always count on snowflakes to tide us creatively over while I keep looking.

Today's twirly whirly paper snowflake mobile is just such an easy and fun craft.  We made ours ona whim one night together before bed.  Don't you just adore it?  You get to make snowflakes AND watch them "fall" from a cute cloud.

(Hmm, I bet you could easily incorporate some STEAM lessons with this art activity as well!)

Make Fun and Colorful Number Chart Sticker Math Art

When I was a kid, I loved learning about patterns.  There was something super thrilling about being able to predict what came next.  Today I'm sharing a colorful STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) Activity that combines my love of patterns, color, and math!  We're making some groovy Number Chart Art!  This activity is the perfect way for kids to practice number recognition, pattern-making, multiplication, addition, and subtraction... while making some beautiful artwork too!

Five reasons

This past Christmas I took a day trip into Manhattan with family.  I completely forgot about these pictures till just recently.  Here are five reasons why I love New York City:

I love the city's buildings.

I love the inhabitants' creativity.

I love the hubbub.

I love the culture.

And I love the food.  (A whole universe of flavors resides in this bowl.)

DIY Colorful Shoelaces!

Lately I've been thinking about super simple Christmas gifts that kids could make for their friends.  Last year Chuck used Sharpies to make his own Sharpie Tie-Dye Shirt.  This time I thought I'd have a turn using Sharpies to turn plain white shoelaces into cute and colorful shoelaces!

Printable Rainbow Danish Hearts

Next week is Valentine's day and today I've got another fun Valentine's Day Craft to share with you!  I love seeing red and white Danish heart ornaments during Christmas.  But why should we only make them in December?  Why not make some Danish hearts for Valentine's Day too?

Yup. We're going all rebel crafter today.

Oh. And since we're breaking the crafting rules, let's ditch the traditional red and white colors for hyper-colorful rainbow colors instead.

That's right.  Living on the wild side.

Shark Valentine Card Box

Sometimes I wish I could be a kid again just to experience the magic of different holidays.  Do you ever feel that way?  As a child New Years seemed cooler, Christmas seemed more magical, and Valentine's Day was way more romantic.  Now that Chuck's getting older, I see him getting excited about holidays too.... and I LOVE it.

Here's a fun Valentine Card Box that I recently designed with Chuck in mind.  (He loooooves sharks.) Isn't it hilarious that the shark "eats" the Valentines?

Free Printable Halloween Agamographs

Ever heard of agamographs? It's optical illusion art that changes depending on how you look at it. I saw this idea first on STEAM powered family. With Halloween coming around, I thought I'd make a coloring sheet agamograph that kids of all ages could try. This would be a perfect after-school activity! No cutting or gluing involved. Just print out the free coloring sheet below, color it in, accordian fold it, and voila! A cool piece of op art!

On the road

Today hubby and I are driving back east to celebrate Christmas with family and friends.  Sadly, Charlie won't be coming with us.
He's going to stay at a doggie hotel.

We will miss him dearly.
I will miss his special corn chip smell,

his tendency to follow us around,
his tongue tickling my toes,
and his snuggles at night.

But not to worry, we'll soon see him again in a week!

How to Make a Sculpey Clay Fairy Door

Do your kids love fairy crafts? My preschooler loves the idea of tiny magical people. And since we always have Sculpey clay lying around, I made him a very small clay fairy door. Isn't it sweet? It's now sitting at the base of our stairs and I love the idea of opening it to visit another tiny enchanted world!

Make Prehistoric Rock Art with Kids

Some of my fondest memories of History classes were times when teachers assigned projects instead of tests.  In 5th grade my friends and I did a presentation on the first transcontinental railroad.  I still remember wearing costumes and using tea to age our documents.  In 9th grade we shot a soap opera style video featuring King Henry the Eighth's wives.  It was fun to write and film... and even more hilarious to watch.   (Picture bad high school acting mixed with Monty Python style humor.  Yup.  Good times.)  Honestly, I don't remember much else from History classes (ack, sorry previous teachers!) but these projects shine brightly in my memory. They were fun to make and really made history come alive.  Hopefully today's craft will help do that for your kids too!  If they're interested in prehistoric times or art history, then this Prehistoric Rock Art Craft is for them!

Liberty Science Center

This year my Christmas gift to hubby was a trip to nearby Liberty Science Center.  Before going, I was a bit worried that Baby Chuck wouldn't find the experience very fun.

It turns out I shouldn't have worried at all because he loved it.  There were tons of knobs, doodads and thingamajiggers for him to yank, twist, and push.

Score!  Two thumbs up for this wall of buttons!

Happy Chinese New Year!

Happy Chinese New Year! Hubby, Chuck, and I celebrated last night by eating dumplings and drinking a fake-pho (faux-pho?) that hubby made.  I really wanted Baby Chuck to wear something Chinesey, but didn't have time to do any shopping.  (Plus, I was feeling cheap.)  So, I made this hat (modeled after this one) out of some materials that I had lying around the house:  a paper plate, used ribbon, construction paper, and some Christmas tinfoil.

Hope you have a wonderful time celebrating with friends and family.

Sweet dreams

Nothing says family fun like gingerbread, icing, and candy.

Last year's family fun

I can't wait till this Christmas.
Oh the icing we'll squeeze!
Oh the candy we'll eat!
Oh the memories we'll make.
